Come to think of it, kink memes go in this direction, don't they? Although I really like the "we're working on stuff together!" communal attitude of a fest, which the anonymity of a kink meme kind of destroys. (I mean. I love the anonymity of kink memes. But they're not fic fests.)
And this reminds me of how for people with certain mental illnesses (depression, depression, depression) writing fic can be a way to make themselves feel better but having that fic criticised can drag them straight back down again. I have a friend who would only write on kink memes because of their no-crit amnesty; it occurs to me that fests in general are quite suited for that kind of thing.
