Access Fandom is a learning & teaching space. It's about how to improve access at conventions and conferences and how to make online fandom more disability-friendly. It's an open community where we welcome free-ranging discussion: Share interesting, relevant links. Talk about your experiences creating or participating in accessible events. Post links to fanfiction, fanart, recs, etc, and/or original works featuring characters with disabilities. Self-promotion and cross-posting between different communities is welcome.

This community seeks to be open to a variety of cognitive styles. We welcome members with and without disabilities. All members may post.

Please be respectful in this space. Not everyone is comfortable using the same self-identifiers or labels. Do not assume member's disability status. People's experiences of disability differ. Do not use ableist, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or other hate-based language.

Acknowledge PAINFUL SUBJECTS with CONTENT NOTICES
People with disabilities often have experience with deeply disturbing life events. Many communities ask their members to alert readers to content which may be "triggering." That word comes from the experience of people with mental health issues. Recognizing that everyone has their limits, we use "painful," a word that covers a broader spectrum. Painful topics make you so furious you can't breathe, give you nightmares, make you doubt your worth. These may include:
  • Cure, forced treatment of any sort
  • Eugenics, abortion, euthanasia, suicide
  • Institutions (nursing or care or group "homes", mental asylums, prisons)
  • Sexual, physical, and emotional abuse or self-harm
  • Graphic depictions of violence, major character death, rape/non-con, underage sexual interactions.

Access Fandom has Three Posting Rules!

It's crucial to our values that all posts are readable.
1. MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS ACCESSIBLE
  • Use subject lines in new posts
  • Use subjects for comments/replies when possible
  • Provide image descriptions for any graphic or photo. If you are not able to describe images, please ask for others to crowdsource a description in comments
  • No animated gifs or videos (links to them OK)
  • Provide text versions of any audio
  • No blinking or scrolling text
  • Pasting bare links is OK


When painful posts are skimmable, enough info is visible for people to choose their reading.
2. CUT PAINFUL SUBJECTS
  • Choose very specific titles, which must include the painful topic.
    For example: not "Bewildering News" but "Curing Barbara Gordon"

  • Brief overview in first paragraph
    Describe topic in a sentence, what kind of discussion you want, what's your goal

  • Place the entire remaining post behind a cut,
    explained here in the DW FAQ.


We don't host beta discussions on this community. It's fine to link to work elsewhere.
3. Use this template for beta requests
  • Type of media: Fanfic, vid, podfic, meta or essay, art, etc.
  • Fandom: (source or original work)
  • Author/Creator: yourself, generally, but maybe someone else
  • Brief description: of the work and what sort of beta notes you are looking for
  • Link: back to further details of the beta request.


These three posting rules are regulated with three moderation steps
  1. Err once, we publicly warn you.
  2. Err twice, we moderate your posts before they appear.
  3. Err thrice, we ban you for 7 days.

These decisions are at the mods' discretion and are final.
