Festibility: Prompt Post

Welcome to the Festibility prompts post!

Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like. You can find out more at the Festibility announcement post on access_fandom!

Here’s how the prompts will work:

Prompts can be general or fandom- or character-specific. You can also choose to specify a type of disability. Be creative and have fun. Post prompts now through September 15th!

Fills can be posted starting Thursday, July 15th and the posting period goes until September 15th. We encourage you to post disability-centric fanworks to [community profile] access_fandom after the close of the fest. After September 15th, please post to the community instead of commenting here, and link back to the prompt (if any) that inspired you.

Nest Your Responses. Respond directly to a prompt with the text of your story in the comment or a link to the story if it is posted elsewhere.

Anonymous commenting is allowed. To post anonymously when logged in, click on 'More Options' and pick 'Anonymous'. Do not ask anyone to reveal themselves if they choose to post anonymously.

Warnings:
We want warnings to be a community standard for this festival. If you need help putting warnings on your fan work, please ask your beta or contact a moderator. We accept “Choose Not To Warn” as a warning, but in the interest of making this fest as accessible as possible we prefer to have works be labeled with specific trigger warnings.

ETA: Please state one of the following on your work: "No warnings apply", "Choose Not to Warn" or include warnings/content notes mentioning any triggering material that does apply to your work. Marking your work in this way helps people with triggers to navigate the Festibility responses. Thank you! /ETA

Warn for common triggers even if the prompt implies some. You must warn for common violent or sexual triggers. Unwarned stories/art are subject to immediate screening at the mods' discretion.

o Triggers to warn for:
o non-con, dub-con, and rape
o character death
o suicide
o self-injury
o child abuse
o graphic torture
o incest
o underage (under the age of 18)
o extremely ableist language
o mind control
o If you are uncertain if you should include a warning, better safe than sorry.

The above list is not all-inclusive or meant to be limiting: people can and should warn for other things. You can gray out warnings or spoilers using this code that amadi posted, which also works for screenreaders.

If you have a policy of not warning, you must put "Author does not warn" in the subject line. Failure to do so will result in immediate screening/deletion.

Post links to NSFW images or images that require warnings. Do not embed them.

Single prompts can be answered as many times as you wish.

Anonymous posting and commenting is allowed.

Language reminder: Please say “has diabetes”, don’t say “suffers from diabetes” or “suffers hearing loss” when describing someone’s disability. Please say “uses a wheelchair” or similarly neutral language, do not say “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”. Please do not use ableist or other oppressive pejoratives such as “lame”. For more about inclusive language, click on the language tag of this community. Also, please do not include disabilities in your content warnings--It is disrespectful to cast a piece of someone's identity as a warning.

ETA: There have been some concerns raised about this language policy. For clarification, this language reminder is meant more for prompt suggestion than for actual fic. You are allowed to use whatever language you like in your fan fic. If there is a lot of ableist language in your fic, we would prefer that you warn for it in your fic headers. You are also welcome to address the negative as well as the positive aspects of living with a disability.

Thank you for participating! Let the prompts begin!

Fullmetal Alchemist -- end of anime series/movie spoilers (skip): Ed deals with the relative primitiveness of the prosthetics available on the far side of the gate (where "deals with" probably includes "shouts a lot") but appreciates the advances in pain medications.

This one's pretty open:

Any character in any fandom who is canonically physically disabled and doesn't, in canon, get healed. Prompt, pick one of Silverware; Leopards; Visigoths; the Spanish Inquisition.
jadelennox: O RLY: all caps on oscar space no space on romeo lima yankee (gimp: o rly?)

and for fairness' sake

This one's pretty open:

Any character in any fandom who is canonically non-physically disabled and doesn't, in canon, get healed. Prompt, pick one of Bunnies; Spain wins the World Cup; Photoshop; Diwali.
minxy: Teal'c raises a hand to say "hey". (Default)

Stargate: SG-1. Teal'c has a complicated relationship with medication.

Stargate: SG-1. A character with naquaadah in their blood deals with psychological changes resulting from it crossing the blood/brain barrier.

NCIS - after his encounter with the pneumonic plague Tony's lungs are too badly damaged for him to pass the physical requirements to remain a field agent.
saavikam77: (Sam&Dean Seance)

[personal profile] saavikam77 2010-07-12 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Supernatural or any fandom where long-distance travel is an everyday thing, any character, AU, living with Crohn's Disease (or any other severe digestive disorder) when the meds don't always work, restrooms are few and far between, and available food choices leave a lot to be desired. Bonus points for bad days where everything simply grinds to a halt, and there are just no spoons to be had.
saavikam77: (Enterprise)

[personal profile] saavikam77 2010-07-12 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Trek XI, The longer Kirk's list of known allergies gets, the more he has to be vigilant for signs of reaction on away missions. Keeping his focus divided doesn't always bode well for the mission of the day, and it only gets worse when he *does* have a reaction, with no access to medical treatment.
such_heights: martha, donna and rose (who: companions)

[personal profile] such_heights 2010-07-12 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Doctor Who, any companion, all this time travel and 'run for your life' stuff makes managing their diabetes much more complicated, but they wouldn't have it any other way.
jesse_the_k: Sprinter with right AK prosthetic leg (prosthetic sprint)

SGA: more remix of Synthesis/Cool Hand Luke/Tall Kingdom

Three great fics form a Stargate Atlantis AU that is already awesome re disability; I'm hoping for more.

In all three, the Lanteans work with the City to develop semi-sentient prosthetics. These eyes and limbs prove so effective that people elect to install them, becoming cyborgs.

It begins with
Synthesis by [personal profile] thingswithwings text and linked podfic here
then there's remix 1
Cool Hand Luke by [personal profile] fiercelydreamed text and linked podfic
and then there's remix 2
Tall Kingdom I Surround by [personal profile] toft text here

Now finally the prompts
1. before the first transformation occurs, show the controversy about starting the process.
or
2. an intentional transformation which goes bad, leaving someone worse off than before.
or
3. someone comes up with a "prosthetic" sexual organ (probably penetrative); explore that experience as well as the alternative function it provides. (Hey, it's SGA! Crack-o-matic!)

Stargate Atlantis, anything goes

A couple of BSG prompts for my favourite queer disabled character of colour:

1) Gaeta's rebellion is successful, and he becomes the commander of the Galactica

2) Gaeta and Hoshi, trying to navigate the changes in their relationship (which was pretty new at the time) after Gaeta loses his leg (or perhaps finding that there aren't as many changes as they thought there would be?)

3) Gaeta and Zarek drinking together

4) Any kind of fixit that you want to do so that [spoiler] doesn't happen
ambyr: pebbles arranged in a spiral on sand (nature sculpture by Andy Goldsworthy) (Pebbles)

[personal profile] ambyr 2010-07-13 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Buffy, AU: Joyce's health problems in season 5 are actually an MS flare-up. She doesn't die, but she does end up needing to use a wheelchair. How do later seasons differ with Joyce still present as a character? (Bonus if it has Joyce and Spike talking about their different experiences with and approaches to using chairs.)

Avatar: TLA: Toph realizes Teo has earthbending potential. She wants him to meet the badgermoles, whom she's convinced can help him learn a way to earthbend despite his disability. Teo's not so sure he's willing to give up flying and go underground to train.
katta: Photo of Diane from Jake 2.0 with Jake's face showing on the computer monitor behind her, and the text Talk geeky to me. (Default)

Doctor Who - a Deaf companion, either OC or an AU version of a canon one. How does the TARDIS deal with translation from and to sign language? How well does it work with lip reading, non-verbal alien languages, or culturally dependent body language? What would the companion's POV be on these and other issues? What would be harder/easier/different than expected?

[personal profile] alara 2010-07-13 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
X-Men (any canon that doesn't have floating hoverchairs.) Charles Xavier is the world's most powerful telepath. This does not help as much as you might think when it comes to navigating buildings that are not ADA-compliant.

sasha_feather: Retro-style poster of skier on pluto. (sheppard collar)

[personal profile] sasha_feather 2010-07-13 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Eugenides the Thief: Fun sexy times (with his wife and/or other characters)

X-Men comicverse canon, an AU where Magneto has actually gotten a diagnosis, and treatment, for his mental illnesses (it looks to me like he probably has both PTSD and a form of bipolar disorder where overuse of his powers triggers mania.) But even in the X-Men universe there is no perfect magical fix for his problems, so he needs to be on meds. How does this affect his perception of himself, his dealings with the X-Men, his dealings with other mutants such as the Acolytes? Are there former followers of his who think that his being on meds is a form of drug-induced mind control that's being inflicted on him and will try to force him to stop taking them? Are there X-Men or other superheroes who refuse to believe that he has his symptoms under control, and are convinced he's going to have another episode and try to take over the world again? Do his meds have side effects?
