There is now a Festibility collection at the Archive of Our Own. Collections are a great way to host a sort of mini-archive, and all participants are welcome and encouraged to post there as well as here.

If you do not yet have an AO3 account and you would like one, leave a comment here or private message [personal profile] lightgetsin with your email address, and we’ll send you an invite code.

How to add fanworks to the collection: There are two ways:

1. Go to the collection page and click on “post to collection.” The form will appear with the collection field already filled out for you.

2. Alternatively, click “post new” from anywhere in the archive and fill out the form as you usually would. Just be sure to put “Festibility2010” in the ‘post to collections/challenges’ field in the associations section.

The AO3 designers and coders have been notably committed to accessibility on the archive and responsive to accessibility requests. Your Festibility mods appreciate their efforts, and want to encourage any challenge participants with access needs or knowledge to use the AO3 and suggest any fixes or improvements through the support feature.

The archive currently does not support multimedia fanworks or anonymous posting, though it will eventually. Sorry! We will bookmark these fanworks from within the collection if posters would like.

I'll be editing this to add new fanworks as they're linked in the comm or added in the prompts post. Please let me know if there's anything I've missed or got wrong.

There's also a Festibility collection at AO3.

Note on warnings: the prompt post says that authors need to either warn for common triggers, put "No warnings apply" (if that's the case), or put "Author does not warn" in the subject line.

Right now, we have:

sick and tired of being sick and tired by anonymous, Glee, Rachel, G, "no warnings apply"

The Uncertain Trumpet by [personal profile] bliumchik, X-Men, Scott Summers, "no warnings I can think of"

Learning to Fly by [personal profile] sqbr A: TLA fanart, Teo, Toph, "No Archive Warnings Apply"

Nobody Bleeds for the Dancer by [personal profile] alexseanchai, Supernatural, Dean, "self-injury & reference to torture & suicide"

After the War by [personal profile] saystheheart, Iron Man, Tony Stark, "Warning: Mentions of canon violence in the first Iron Man movie. Some self-loathing on Tony's part"

A Matter of Secrets by [personal profile] jalendavi_lady, A:TLA, Zuko, Toph, PG, "Advisory: Includes discussion of disabilities by people who grew up in a heavily ableist culture and by teenagers tripping over the English language. "

Toph Fanart Linkspam by [personal profile] laceblade

The Better Part of Valor story by Teresa C. , podfic by [personal profile] juniperphoenix, Highlander, "Content warnings: none"

The Booth in the Back by [personal profile] gorgeousnerd, Supernatural, Dean, PG-13, gen, "PG-13 for creature-related violence and strong (but non-ableist) language"; "Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings" on AO3.

What He Means When He Talks About Running by anonymous, DCU, Wally West, gen, "No warnings apply"

More Barnabas Collins than Nick Knight by [personal profile] jadelennox, Community, Abed + ensemble, gen, G, "No warnings apply"

Heart of Steel by [personal profile] milleniumrex, DC Comics, Kara Zor-El/Cassie Sandsmark, PG-13, "Contains some ableist language from a character dealing with a new disability, as well as from a villain. This fic is aiming for a realistic look at dealing with quadriplegia, so there will be some dark parts in the early going, including brief discussion of suicidal urges. Contains discussion of underage sexuality, but no sex scenes."

Sister by [personal profile] terajk, Halloween, R for graphic violence and language, Warnings: "Character death (murder), psych system abuse, ableist language."

The Case of the Maiden Tribute by [personal profile] katta, Sherlock Holmes (2009), R, Warnings: "Graphic depiction of violence, nongraphic depiction of sexual child abuse" -- author would like to note that it's not primarily focused on the disability element

Awakenings by [personal profile] stainless, Transformers, PG, "Warnings: Not too much, really. Maybe a bit of violence, since there's fighting, but it's not very dark. And a few bits that I suppose could be suggestive."

Ship Duty by anonymous, Vorkosigan series, Ivan, gen, "Warnings: None apply so far, but unfinished. I'll note if it changes. Um, this is the first fanfic I’ve ever posted, so that’s the warning; Part 3: "Warning: I'm referencing (non-graphic) abuse in the past by Serg Vorbarr and Ges Vorrutyer, and some really horrible (but typically Barrayaran) treatment of the victims afterward. So par for the universe, but still warning-worthy." ETA: Now complete and posted in full on AO3: Ship Duty by miss_lanyon.

Forward Momentum by [personal profile] azurelunatic, Vorkosigan series, Miles, gen, warnings: "references to past surgery."

to this earth we fall by [personal profile] gloss, Marvel comics, Bucky Barnes & Nick Fury, PG. "Note: Both characters were born well before WWII and their worldviews are...not quite in synch with modern attitudes; readers should be warned for ableist language and convictions."

This Time is Different (And Better) by [personal profile] katta, Threshold, "no archive warnings apply".

Gaps by [personal profile] terajk, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko & Azula, PG-13, "Warnings: Language, ableism."

Although I am not an artist myself, I love looking at fanart online. I keep an extensive collection of favorites at deviantART, and at [personal profile] sasha_feather's suggestion, I am posting links to Toph fanart here for Festibility.

All links go to various pages of fanart at deviantART.com. You can click on the pictures to make them bigger; artist descriptions of the piece can be viewed if you scroll down a bit.

Since somebody has to be gauche enough to post first :D (Though for anyone else feeling a bit overwhelmed by trying to keep track of the fills as they're posted, they start on page 11 of the flat version of the comments. There aren't very many yet though)

Both works are G-rated gen humour and don't have any warnings(*), and all the images have transcripts/descriptions(**).
Fancomic, fanfic, fanart )

Dear mods, here are some tags which I would have liked to have added and which I think would be useful in general:
fandom: avatar the last airbender, fanart, prompt fill (As much as I'd like it, "fancomic" is a tag which is unlikely to get as much use :))

(*)I'd say "don't have any content notes" but I don't think the meaning would be as clear.
(**)And if there's anything about these transcripts that's unhelpful let me know!

Festibility is open! There are already several great fanworks in the Prompt Post. Keep posting prompts and threaded responses in comments!

Banners for the fest (now with copy and paste code!) made by [personal profile] eruthros are available in this post.

Please feel free to post fanworks or links to fanworks in direct posts in the community.

Comment here if you would like to volunteer as a beta. You may wish to specify fandoms or types of works you specialize in (fic, vids, etc), or other details.

Also comment here if you are seeking a beta. It helps if you describe the fanwork you are creating, so potential betas will have an idea about whether they’re a good fit.

[personal profile] eruthros kindly made eleven banners that you can use to advertise this fest or decorate your journal/website. They have the dates of the Fest (July 15 through September 15) and various characters on them. They are hosted at my photobucket account, so yes can hotlink, or right-click-save-as and upload to your own space. I am including alt-tag descriptions for each banner. You can find out how to do alt tags for images at this post in hope's journal. You should be able to read the alt text by hovering your mouse over the image or by right-clicking and looking at "properties".

ETA: Clicking on the banners will take you to the Festibility announcement page. You can also copy the code from the text box under each banner to use elsewhere!

Welcome to the Festibility prompts post!

Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like. You can find out more at the Festibility announcement post on access_fandom!

Here’s how the prompts will work:

Prompts can be general or fandom- or character-specific. You can also choose to specify a type of disability. Be creative and have fun. Post prompts now through September 15th!

Fills can be posted starting Thursday, July 15th and the posting period goes until September 15th. We encourage you to post disability-centric fanworks to [community profile] access_fandom after the close of the fest. After September 15th, please post to the community instead of commenting here, and link back to the prompt (if any) that inspired you.

Nest Your Responses. Respond directly to a prompt with the text of your story in the comment or a link to the story if it is posted elsewhere.

Anonymous commenting is allowed. To post anonymously when logged in, click on 'More Options' and pick 'Anonymous'. Do not ask anyone to reveal themselves if they choose to post anonymously.

Warnings:
We want warnings to be a community standard for this festival. If you need help putting warnings on your fan work, please ask your beta or contact a moderator. We accept “Choose Not To Warn” as a warning, but in the interest of making this fest as accessible as possible we prefer to have works be labeled with specific trigger warnings.

ETA: Please state one of the following on your work: "No warnings apply", "Choose Not to Warn" or include warnings/content notes mentioning any triggering material that does apply to your work. Marking your work in this way helps people with triggers to navigate the Festibility responses. Thank you! /ETA

Warn for common triggers even if the prompt implies some. You must warn for common violent or sexual triggers. Unwarned stories/art are subject to immediate screening at the mods' discretion.

o Triggers to warn for:
o non-con, dub-con, and rape
o character death
o suicide
o self-injury
o child abuse
o graphic torture
o incest
o underage (under the age of 18)
o extremely ableist language
o mind control
o If you are uncertain if you should include a warning, better safe than sorry.

The above list is not all-inclusive or meant to be limiting: people can and should warn for other things. You can gray out warnings or spoilers using this code that amadi posted, which also works for screenreaders.

If you have a policy of not warning, you must put "Author does not warn" in the subject line. Failure to do so will result in immediate screening/deletion.

Post links to NSFW images or images that require warnings. Do not embed them.

Single prompts can be answered as many times as you wish.

Anonymous posting and commenting is allowed.

Language reminder: Please say “has diabetes”, don’t say “suffers from diabetes” or “suffers hearing loss” when describing someone’s disability. Please say “uses a wheelchair” or similarly neutral language, do not say “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”. Please do not use ableist or other oppressive pejoratives such as “lame”. For more about inclusive language, click on the language tag of this community. Also, please do not include disabilities in your content warnings--It is disrespectful to cast a piece of someone's identity as a warning.

ETA: There have been some concerns raised about this language policy. For clarification, this language reminder is meant more for prompt suggestion than for actual fic. You are allowed to use whatever language you like in your fan fic. If there is a lot of ableist language in your fic, we would prefer that you warn for it in your fic headers. You are also welcome to address the negative as well as the positive aspects of living with a disability.

Thank you for participating! Let the prompts begin!

Announcing [community profile] access_fandom’s first Fanworks Festival, Festibility!

What: Hosted by [community profile] access_fandom, Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like.

When: July 15 to September 15, 2010 (for those who work best under deadlines). Yes, this starts one week from today!

How: We’ll make a post soliciting prompts from you tomorrow! Prompts can be general or fandom-specific. Feel free to respond to prompts with commentfic, or use them for longer works posted during the festival posting period. You don’t have to claim particular prompts to post, and claiming a prompt does not mean you’ve committed to posting a fanwork filling it. You can also post fanworks without filling any prompt--basically, anything goes!

ETA: Here is the prompts post!

Who: For Festibility, your mods are [personal profile] kaz, [personal profile] lightgetsin, [personal profile] sasha_feather, and [personal profile] were_duck. Any and everyone is welcome to participate!

We will also host a beta pool of folks willing to check other folks’ fanworks for portrayals of disability. This is entirely volunteer and optional, though we ask that participants make a strong effort and do their research in order to create positive and affirming portrayals of characters with disabilities. Your mods will do our best to provide resources to help you reach this goal!

Please note that you can post links to fanworks or recs in this community at any time. The end date of this festival is when your mods will stop cheerleading; it does not mean that you have to stop posting. This is intended to be a low-pressure festival.

Please watch this community for more information. Leave comments here or contact one of the mods listed above with any questions or concerns.

here is a list of canonically disabled characters that we came up with to get you started thinking! )
