Festibility: Prompt Post

Welcome to the Festibility prompts post!

Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like. You can find out more at the Festibility announcement post on access_fandom!

Here’s how the prompts will work:

Prompts can be general or fandom- or character-specific. You can also choose to specify a type of disability. Be creative and have fun. Post prompts now through September 15th!

Fills can be posted starting Thursday, July 15th and the posting period goes until September 15th. We encourage you to post disability-centric fanworks to [community profile] access_fandom after the close of the fest. After September 15th, please post to the community instead of commenting here, and link back to the prompt (if any) that inspired you.

Nest Your Responses. Respond directly to a prompt with the text of your story in the comment or a link to the story if it is posted elsewhere.

Anonymous commenting is allowed. To post anonymously when logged in, click on 'More Options' and pick 'Anonymous'. Do not ask anyone to reveal themselves if they choose to post anonymously.

Warnings:
We want warnings to be a community standard for this festival. If you need help putting warnings on your fan work, please ask your beta or contact a moderator. We accept “Choose Not To Warn” as a warning, but in the interest of making this fest as accessible as possible we prefer to have works be labeled with specific trigger warnings.

ETA: Please state one of the following on your work: "No warnings apply", "Choose Not to Warn" or include warnings/content notes mentioning any triggering material that does apply to your work. Marking your work in this way helps people with triggers to navigate the Festibility responses. Thank you! /ETA

Warn for common triggers even if the prompt implies some. You must warn for common violent or sexual triggers. Unwarned stories/art are subject to immediate screening at the mods' discretion.

o Triggers to warn for:
o non-con, dub-con, and rape
o character death
o suicide
o self-injury
o child abuse
o graphic torture
o incest
o underage (under the age of 18)
o extremely ableist language
o mind control
o If you are uncertain if you should include a warning, better safe than sorry.

The above list is not all-inclusive or meant to be limiting: people can and should warn for other things. You can gray out warnings or spoilers using this code that amadi posted, which also works for screenreaders.

If you have a policy of not warning, you must put "Author does not warn" in the subject line. Failure to do so will result in immediate screening/deletion.

Post links to NSFW images or images that require warnings. Do not embed them.

Single prompts can be answered as many times as you wish.

Anonymous posting and commenting is allowed.

Language reminder: Please say “has diabetes”, don’t say “suffers from diabetes” or “suffers hearing loss” when describing someone’s disability. Please say “uses a wheelchair” or similarly neutral language, do not say “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”. Please do not use ableist or other oppressive pejoratives such as “lame”. For more about inclusive language, click on the language tag of this community. Also, please do not include disabilities in your content warnings--It is disrespectful to cast a piece of someone's identity as a warning.

ETA: There have been some concerns raised about this language policy. For clarification, this language reminder is meant more for prompt suggestion than for actual fic. You are allowed to use whatever language you like in your fan fic. If there is a lot of ableist language in your fic, we would prefer that you warn for it in your fic headers. You are also welcome to address the negative as well as the positive aspects of living with a disability.

Thank you for participating! Let the prompts begin!

What He Means When He Talks About Running

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
Wally West with dysthymia. Gen - No warnings apply.

---

The world speeds by, a blurred mass of grey and blue and eventually white. He keeps running, ears ringing with the sound of his feet steadily pounding the ground.

He is the Fastest Man Alive; he is the man who became one with the Speed Force and came back; he is the man rumoured to outrun Death itself.

It's almost funny that he can't run from this.

*

'You're late.' snaps Dr Liew. 'You should have been here twenty minutes ago.'

'Sorry.' He bites his lip and sits. Twiddles his fingers.

She arranges papers. If he cranes his neck he can see the neat lettering: WALLY WEST, it says, humourlessly, and inside? The Illness, scrawled in an illegible hand. It has a smile like Thawne's. Wide, and mocking. A leech that'll suck him dry before it falls off, gorged on everything that he is, and could be. Sometimes it changes into a faceless person, with one of those concerned smiles. You can be happy if you choose to be, it says, reaching out to him.

He remembers that when he finds himself in an alley with an unconscious mugger. The same smile. You can be happy if you choose to be.

*

On a good day, he wakes up. Kisses Linda. Makes breakfast. Goes to work. Excuses himself several times (Bank robbery. Who even does that anymore?). Goes for lunch. Thinks about his place in the universe. Wonders if Grodd's hatching an evil plan. Goes home. Kisses Linda. Sleeps.

On a bad day, he wakes up. Feels like crap. Kisses Linda. Forgets breakfast. Cracks a joke about forgetting breakfast. Still feels like crap. Goes to work. Excuses himself several times (Doc says the meds help, but he feels like crap again after taking them). Goes for lunch. Changes his mind. Watches the sky. Feels like crap. Goes for a quick run. Keeps running. And running. And running.

*

'Taking your medicine?'

'Yes.'

'Any problems?'

'No.'

'How have you been coping?'

'Okay, I guess.'

'Have you told Linda?'

'No.'

Her pen stops abruptly. He continues twiddling his thumbs.

'It's nothing to be ashamed of,' she says.

Your other patients don't need to save the world. Aloud: 'I know.'

He'll go for a run afterwards.

Title: More Barnabas Collins than Nick Knight
Fandom: Community
Rating: G
Characters: Abed + ensemble
Gen

Note: I'm using the show's characterization of Abed (described in canon, snarkily, as having Asperger's; described in creator meta as unlabeled/undiagnosed). The Internet AS response I've seen to the portrayal is mixed leaning positive, so I'm trusting it for now. But please tell me if I fail, whether in my own characterizations or in trusting the show.

"That's a girl movie," Troy said, slamming his books down on the library table. "I am not seeing any girl movie with you."

Abed cocked his head. "We watched High School Musical three times in my room."

"Shhhhh!" Troy looked frantically around, but nobody was in earshot. Annie and Jeff were flirting outside the window, Shirley was slapping Pierce across the face over by the bookshelves, and Britta wasn't there yet. "That's different." Sometimes he had to explain these really obvious things to Abed. "First of all, that was in your room, not at the theater, so nobody saw. And secondly, Corbin Bleu is a fantastic dancer."

"Hmm." Abed looked thoughtful. "So if there was dancing you would come with me? Is this a Patrick Swayze thing?"

"No!"

Shirley, flushed with smug indignation, slid into her seat. "Is Abed asking if he can borrow your weeble collection again?"

"Troy won't come to see Eclipse with me because it's a girl movie without any dancing," said Abed.

"I won't go to see Eclipse with you because it's a girl movie, period!"

Shirley smiled. "Ooh, I like that Taylor Lautner. He has a sweet smile." She dimpled, with a faraway look in her eyes.

Suddenly Annie was there, with the indignant expression she got when she learned that Jeff was reading the Spark Notes for The Old Man And the Sea. "Team Edward, Shirley!"

Shirley harumphed. "If my boys behaved that way I'd give them a hiding. But the werewolves are very nice."

"You mean you like their shirtless abs," sneered Jeff.

"Edward is totally right for Bella!" insisted Annie. "And you can't hold vampires responsible for not following human social mores."

"Actually," said Abed, "many fictional vampires have an obsession with trying to understand and follow human social structures. The essential conflict between Lestat and Louis is about which aspects of human morality and social hierarchy apply when you're a vampire. Stefan and Damon Salvatore are modern reworking of that classic trope. Angel wants to live like a human but also wants to lurk around in alleys like a Batman look-alike. The entire Überwald League of Temperance is about vampires learning to assimilate to the human world. And since most vampires want to date humans, they all need to learn enough about mortal society to pass. Look at Alexander Sterling of the Vampire Kisses books." He paused. "I guess Bunnicula doesn't try to assimilate."

There was silence. Finally, Annie said in a small voice, "You read the Vampire Kisses books?"

"I ship Alexander/Trevor," said Abed.

"Oh my god, aren't they perfect together?" squealed Annie.

"See, you're proving my point," said Troy. "Totally for girls."

"Yep," said Abed.

"Good. Then tonight we're watching Kickpuncher XII: The Return of Neckfoot?"

Abed looked quizzically at Troy. "You can if you want. I'm going to Eclipse."

"I know why you're talking about that movie," called Britta as she entered. "You think I'm going to complain about its misogyny like I did with the first two. But I don't need to! I'm above all that!"

They all ignored her.

"Abed, my friend," said Troy. He put a hand on Abed's arm. Abed looked down at the hand, up at Troy, back down at the hand, and back up at Troy. Troy pulled back his hand. "Girl movie."

"Did you know that Eclipse set the record for the biggest midnight opening in box office history?" asked Abed.

"That's nice," said Shirley, absently. She was drawing something that looked suspiciously like Taylor Lautner's abs on her Spanish homework.

"What's that got to do with anything?" asked Troy.

"Before Eclipse, the record for the biggest midnight opening was held by New Moon," Abed continued. "The movie was released in a record-breaking 4,416 theaters. It took in a record $68,533,840 for a mid-weak opening. There were 97,905 admissions in the Netherlands."

He paused.

"Girl movie," he said significantly.

Troy still looked blank.

"95.7% of tickets to the film are purchased by women and girls."

Troy still looked blank.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," said Jeff. "He's going to the stupid vampire movie to pick up chicks."

"Ohhhhh," said Troy. His face cleared.

Abed looked at Jeff. "I thought I said that."

"Abed," said Troy. He looked like he wanted to throw an arm around Abed, but he refrained. "Have we got a date for tonight."

There is ragged wallpaper beneath his fingers. Scott slides his hand across it till his fingers bump an outcrop of smooth painted wood. Right. Windowsill. He gropes for the catch on the window, silently making yet another mental note to ask Kurt to give him a proper sitrep when he drops Scott off in random places. Kurt's pretty good about it in relation to the battle - right now, for instance, he knows Hank is fighting Toad and the Blob across a pile of rubble from him, Bobby and Rogue teaming up on Pyro on the west side of the street and Jean squaring off against Phantazia between them.

But no, Scott grumbles to himself as the window finally slides open, "Fourth floor, double-hung windows" is apparently too much to ask.

He orients himself towards the battle and sends a query Jean's way. The inhuman screeching from somewhere above indicates that Sauron has just arrived in his Pteranodon form (which Scott expected to happen at some point, or he'd be on the roof).

About time, Medusa, Jean sends with a mental smirk. What happened, Nightcrawler took you out for coffee?

He concentrates on picturing his right hand (a hand that feels twenty-three but looks sixteen, in his head, and will always look sixteen) and raises its middle finger.

She giggles (in his head, which is always slightly alarming). Wanna burn holes in this bitch's ass?

Just point and shoot, O Fearless Leader.

Muscles he didn't even know were tense relax in his neck as the familiar tendrils of Jean's power sink into him, feeling his location. Jean, who stood by him when Logan wanted him off the team. Who was the first one to convince him to open his eyes. Who is still the only one he really trusts to make sure anything he incinerates is evil or inanimate. God, he wishes he knew what she looks like.

Gotcha, she says, turning his head down and a few degrees to the right. I'm holding her off for now, we need to rescue Hank. Fire in three!

Scott smiles as he starts counting off - her command voice has improved drastically. She was never comfortable leading the X-Men in the field at such a young age, and he hadn't helped at the start, constantly second-guessing her strategy - it was so frustrating, having the instinct and the confidence of a born leader but being unable to fulfill his potential. He couldn't make split-second decisions when he relied so heavily on an oral report or, at best, a telepathic infodump from Jean or the Professor. And on top of that, guilt and fear, constant fear of killing someone just by looking at them. He'd taken it out on her. He'd taken it out on everyone. He wasn't proud of it.

Still, they worked through it. He eventually settled into "strategic advisor and artillery" with some form of dignity intact. There is still that rising terror when his eyelids quiver, but he tells himself, Jean's got me. And Jean's got him.

FIRE!

Scott opens his eyes.

Great team dynamic and I loved the way they shared information. Keeping Scott as heavy artillery makes a lot of sense, but I found it very interesting the way his control-freak tendencies warred with his particular disability, even though he's probably got a better understanding of the situation than he would with his own eyes.

Thanks :) I figured even telepathic infodump would have a delay that could be deadly in the field. It would just remove physical speech-speed barriers.

Medusa! :-) Such a cool flourish. Good work!

>"...having the instinct and the confidence of a born leader but..."

I really enjoyed experiencing Scott's ultra-responsible, older-brother, born-leader side -- the essence of the character -- rechanneled but unchanged by the absence of the ruby quartz.

On reflection -- triggered by "God, he wishes he knew what she looks like." -- my mind went to that unforgettable canonical moment on the mesa when Phoenix -- with far too much power; how creepy it becomes in retrospect that this was how and when the excess Phoenix Force power first obviously manifested -- held back his eye-blasts. In this AU you've created, I imagine the parallel of that moment, and it's even more touching, and even more creepy.

Thank you very much for sharing.

Psych, Shawn Spencer, People always assumed he screwed everything up on purpose (to be funny or because he didn't care), so he learned to roll with it. (Shawn has ADD/ADHD)

I always liked him, just 'cuz he's a goof, but I can definitely see how people would be annoyed by him. (And I'd probably be hella annoyed with him IRL. XD)

Any fandom: A character - possibly canonically nondisabled - is a covert stutterer. (For people who don't know what I'm referring to, here are some links about stuttering including some about covert stuttering that give a decent overview.)

Part of me hopes someone will write Tina from Glee as an overt stutterer turned covert who decided to pretend she never stuttered at all just out of revenge. But really, so so many characters could work with this, and I think it would be awesome to see some really extroverted not-shy-or-visibly-anxious character written as a stutterer. Break those stereotypes! \o/

I'd read anything with this prompt, but if someone could work up a reasonably convincing story with Dean Winchester as a covert stutterer, I'd be all over it. Canonically I'm pretty sure he stopped talking for a while as a child. This would be so fascinating to explore.

Thanks.

Assuming that's a "my" stuttering, I offer you a stutterer-to-stutterer (or PWS but I can't manage to get that fussed about the language) fistbump! *\o/* There is a reason I'm requesting this, although because I'm not covert it's not as id-tastic as it could be!

Anyway, I hope the information helps! I can also link you to a few stuttering blogs I know of, although I should add that I tend to be a bit radical when it comes to stuttering acceptance and anything I link is probably going to reflect that.

I've never really given much thought to my stuttering (or stuttering in general). It was just something that was there and I avoided doing it as much as possible. It wasn't until I read some of those links that I really started thinking about all the things I do to avoid the stuttering. It's been very eye opening.

I was just about to leave my "Paul Gross arms" happy ASCII person, when I realized you probably had jaws configured not to read you the punctuation. So instead I will say "Paul Gross arms". Followed by "smiley face". Which ironically, of course, is exactly the same number of words it takes me to say the things in order to get the punctuation on the page, but I have to pause in different places so it knows I'm saying words.

Hilariously, the default punctuation configuration for my preset level announces a /, but not a \. so \o/ is read as "o slash." I always thought that was entirely appropriate.
