Festibility: Prompt Post

Welcome to the Festibility prompts post!

Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like. You can find out more at the Festibility announcement post on access_fandom!

Here’s how the prompts will work:

Prompts can be general or fandom- or character-specific. You can also choose to specify a type of disability. Be creative and have fun. Post prompts now through September 15th!

Fills can be posted starting Thursday, July 15th and the posting period goes until September 15th. We encourage you to post disability-centric fanworks to [community profile] access_fandom after the close of the fest. After September 15th, please post to the community instead of commenting here, and link back to the prompt (if any) that inspired you.

Nest Your Responses. Respond directly to a prompt with the text of your story in the comment or a link to the story if it is posted elsewhere.

Anonymous commenting is allowed. To post anonymously when logged in, click on 'More Options' and pick 'Anonymous'. Do not ask anyone to reveal themselves if they choose to post anonymously.

Warnings:
We want warnings to be a community standard for this festival. If you need help putting warnings on your fan work, please ask your beta or contact a moderator. We accept “Choose Not To Warn” as a warning, but in the interest of making this fest as accessible as possible we prefer to have works be labeled with specific trigger warnings.

ETA: Please state one of the following on your work: "No warnings apply", "Choose Not to Warn" or include warnings/content notes mentioning any triggering material that does apply to your work. Marking your work in this way helps people with triggers to navigate the Festibility responses. Thank you! /ETA

Warn for common triggers even if the prompt implies some. You must warn for common violent or sexual triggers. Unwarned stories/art are subject to immediate screening at the mods' discretion.

o Triggers to warn for:
o non-con, dub-con, and rape
o character death
o suicide
o self-injury
o child abuse
o graphic torture
o incest
o underage (under the age of 18)
o extremely ableist language
o mind control
o If you are uncertain if you should include a warning, better safe than sorry.

The above list is not all-inclusive or meant to be limiting: people can and should warn for other things. You can gray out warnings or spoilers using this code that amadi posted, which also works for screenreaders.

If you have a policy of not warning, you must put "Author does not warn" in the subject line. Failure to do so will result in immediate screening/deletion.

Post links to NSFW images or images that require warnings. Do not embed them.

Single prompts can be answered as many times as you wish.

Anonymous posting and commenting is allowed.

Language reminder: Please say “has diabetes”, don’t say “suffers from diabetes” or “suffers hearing loss” when describing someone’s disability. Please say “uses a wheelchair” or similarly neutral language, do not say “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”. Please do not use ableist or other oppressive pejoratives such as “lame”. For more about inclusive language, click on the language tag of this community. Also, please do not include disabilities in your content warnings--It is disrespectful to cast a piece of someone's identity as a warning.

ETA: There have been some concerns raised about this language policy. For clarification, this language reminder is meant more for prompt suggestion than for actual fic. You are allowed to use whatever language you like in your fan fic. If there is a lot of ableist language in your fic, we would prefer that you warn for it in your fic headers. You are also welcome to address the negative as well as the positive aspects of living with a disability.

Thank you for participating! Let the prompts begin!

warning: mention of dubcon

DC Comics/Dick Grayson: Batman (Dick Grayson) suffers from manic hypersexuality. What are the consequences of this?

We have the obvious consequences from rogues (possible forensic problems + almost all of them are doctors or psychiatrists or emotionally/sexually manipulative as an M.O.). We also have a very large extended family of often damaged and unstable friends, more-than-friends, family and lovers with many having very strong feelings about Dick, whatever they are.

I got this idea from Dick's generally odd sexual behaviour in the canon. Ignoring any slashy interpretations and only in his costumed life there was Barbara, and there was Kory; apparently according to recent-ish canon he slept with Barbara before his wedding to Kory. He's had sexual relations with supervillains with seemingly no prompting other than their interest, including Catwoman of all people
(skip)and a bizarre dubcon episode with Tarantula.

Let's ignore writers' shipping wars, comic characters' sluttiness in general, the hugely numerous and long affairs that result from having over seventy years of canon behind you being compressed to fit into a vague ten-to-fifteen year timeline and the emotional 180 a character has between different series with different stories planned. Let's just think about the in-world situation. Is he looking for this? Is he taking hints out of thin air for sex that is clearly no good for anyone? Who could have worked it out by now if he is?

I hope this doesn't come off as missing the point of a disability meme, please delete if it does! LOL NYMPHO is not what I mean here. Yes I know where to find Teland, which is... This prompt, almost.

Discussion here has convinced me I've misinterpreted it all. (It aaaaall.) I still love my prompt ;_;

Despicable Me - one or more of the girls has a learning disability. (I'm picturing Ethel with ADD/ADHD, for some reason, but feel free to do whatever speaks to you.) How would this affect her in a technogeek-supervillain family? What challenges does this present Grue with as the parent of a special-needs child? Would Doctor Neutrino try to rewire her brain? Drama!

Bonus points if her Thing makes her able to more easily connect with/understand the Minions.

This prompt is brilliant.

*loves this movie so much*
sholio: sun on winter trees (Avatar-Zuko fighting Azula)

[personal profile] sholio 2010-08-01 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Avatar: The Last Airbender - prompt contains mild spoilers for finale: (skip) Sokka's leg injury in the finale leaves him with permanent mobility impairment (which for all I know may actually be what the creators intended, since the only times we see him afterwards, he's either still on crutches, or sitting down)..
syntheid: [Elementary] Watson drinking tea looking contemplative (Default)

[personal profile] syntheid 2010-08-04 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
FMA (Brotherhood/Mangaverse) - spoilers for end of the series (skip) Roy's blindness is permanent, but he succeeds in becoming the country's new leader anyway. Bonus for Havoc still using a wheelchair as well, but playing a crucial role.
softestbullet: Aeryn cupping Pilot's cheek. He has his big eyes closed. (Default)

Yesss! I was really annoyed by the way those two disabilities were treated in the ending. :/

Any superhero fandom - Creative use of superpowers to adapt to a disability.

For instance, using super-hearing to compensate for blindness, or someone who's lost the use of their hands training their telekinesis to replace those functions.

nwhepcat: sam winchester broody (sam insomnielle)

[personal profile] nwhepcat 2010-08-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Supernatural: Sam has Tourette Syndrome -- preferably without the cursing, but with physical tics and vocalizations. It waxes and wanes depending on a variety of factors -- worse when he's stressed, better (or almost gone) when he's intensely focused. Though he used meds during his time in Stanford, he feels they slow down his reflexes during a hunt. I'd love to see a fic set in early or mid S1, where Sam's going off his meds and dealing with his grief, and Dean isn't sure what to make of this Sam he barely recognizes (and perhaps he wasn't diagnosed until he was at Stanford).
alianora: Sakurai Sho from Arashi, hand over one eye (ARASHI: Aiba Adorable)

Young Wizards, Darryl. An alternate ending to A Wizard Alone. Surely there's a way to trap the Lone Power without coercing Darryl into accepting a magical cure.

Thank you so much for this prompt, regardless of whether or not it gets filled- I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who had a problem with that ending.

Inception, Cobb has PTSD because of Mal.

Star Trek AOS: I saw it mentioned in a con report that people were agreeing that the think Kirk has bipolar. I'd love to see something done with that idea!

Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan and the PTSD she picked up during the war(s, either Escobar or the Pretender's War, or both). Since she's dropped as viewpoint character after the Pretender's War, we don't get to see the long-term effects particularly much.

Any fandom with settings where a wide variety of sentient beings mix and mingle:

What happens when universal design goes literally universal- or galactic, or multiplanar? How does having so much physical and/or mental diversity between species affect attitudes to diversity within-species?
amilyn: Brennan frowning, "I don't know what that means." (don't know)

Bones. After meeting Brennan's cousin Margaret at Christmas dinner in "The Goop on the Girl" (S5), it's even more obvious than before that Autism Spectrum Diorders/Asperger's run in Brennan's family. But who in the lab is aware enough for it to be "obvious"...and who either blunders into saying something in passing, thinking "everyone knows/has seen" or decides to say something on purpose? And did Brennan know? Did Booth?
amilyn: Brennan frowning, "I don't know what that means." (don't know)

Bones, AU, explosion aftermath

[personal profile] amilyn 2010-08-20 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
There have been two "what if" stories at the Bitesize_Bones "What if" comment fic meme that fit here:

One asks "What if Booth had been permanently wounded in the fridge explosion in 'Two Bodies in the Lab'?" (S1), and was written in two parts in the comments by [profile] zerodetorres where Booth has an amputation after the explosion.

Another Prompt by [personal profile] biba79 asked "What if Brennan had been blown up instead of Booth in 'Two Bodies in the Lab'?" and results in Brennan having a significant and permanent visual impairment. (Full story not chunked out in comments can be found here.)

[livejournal.com profile] kestrelct wrote me some happy poly shippiness between Mary, Colin, and Dickon from The Secret Garden, which also fit Festibility. It is "Breakfast in Bed", and in addition to the author's summary, I would add that it shows Colin doing ordinary physical things because he can.
