I want to ask you to remove my entry from your list. (I am [livejournal.com profile] senior_witch at LJ. If you have a look at my entry, you will discover that I don't contribute to the discussion but have decided that I will rather gain my information on political and social matters from books and journals. I don't think that your linklist is the correct place for it, except if you want to discuss the war in Afghanistan (which is what the rest of the entry is about.)

Thank you for collecting & sorting these; I know how much work it is. (And how much fun. But there's a lot of persnickety annoying work crammed into the fun.)

most of these are just linkages/"this is really awesome!"s

When I was doing linkspam roundups, I tagged those "signalboost" on my notes document. (And rarely included them in roundups, but that's a matter of choice & community focus. It's nice to know how many people are interested even if they're not directly saying much.)

We discussed that and came to the conclusion that we couldn't know whether a signalboost post might start generating interesting discussion in the comments; I am still somewhat worried because we have so many signalboosts that they drown out the actual discussion. (OTOH, if we left out signalboosts we would be left with very little. :()

Also, as someone with experience with linkspam, do you have any particular tips and tricks to recommend? :( Mainly it seems like I'm just searching Icerocket for any combination of keywords that seems reasonable (which has resulted in some interesting experiences such as reading through all the recent blogposts including the word "disability"), but I know Icerocket doesn't pick up everything and I'm worried I'm missing huge swathes of conversation off somewhere.

Google blogsearch is also useful. Not nearly as good as Icerocket--but it gets some stuff that IR misses. So does a standard Google search, once in a while.

Any phrase that pops up in several posts is worth searching for. Also, names of big-name bloggers + keyword helped sometimes. Deciding on a #fail tag early in a round of discussions helps tremendously, but isn't always feasible. (Tag should be unique to the event; "disabilityfail" is a bad idea. "Femdisfail" would've been possible, but sounds ridiculous, and I doubt it would've caught on.)

Nothing will consistently turn up posts on LJ that aren't searchable by Google. However, if you know the usernames of LJers who are outspoken on the topic, or just some of the controversial and heavily-linked or much-commented posts--visit their friendspages, and scroll through, looking for other people's reaction.

This is much, much more time-consuming than search engines. (And distracting. Reading strangers' f'pages is a fascinating game of its own.) But it'll turn up posts that you'd otherwise never find.

-------
With signalboosts, if they had a good discussion going, I included them as standard posts. If I had time/awareness, I'd tag them as "signalboost w/discussion," but working alone, I often didn't bother.

If I were including other signalboosts, I'd probably separate them out, and leave them single-spaced so's not to overwhelm the other posts. (I considered posting them as bare links, rather than username + title-with-link, just to make it very obvious that they were different.)

One more note--when posts were crossposted, I didn't include the LJ/IJ version if it didn't allow comments. I would include posts with comments locked, but not if they were duplicated elsewhere that allowed comments. (Haven't read enough of this set to know if you're doing that, and you may or may not want to follow that pattern. But noting that comments are blocked is generally useful.)
