AO3 Reaches 5 Million Fanworks!

To celebrate this milestone, the archive created a Fanworks Bingo card, encouraging folks to comment at the announcement and brag elsewhere on with #AO3Bingo hashtag.

The original post only had a graphic version. In response to my comment, [archiveofourown.org profile] i_dwell_in_darkness quickly transcribed the text. I rotated the columns and rows to make a version that will be easier to use with braille devices

Call For Proposals: Disability and/in/through fanfiction

I don't think I got round to mentioning this when it first came up. It's theoretically closed now, but they just said on the Fans for Accessible Conventions FB group that if anyone is working on something, get in touch and they'll see what they can do.

a post on disability and the right to personhood, and how I want to see more of it in fanfiction is up at my journal. Main fandom mentioned is Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with a couple jabs at Star Trek AOS because it will never really get worse for me than the infantilisation of Jim Kirk. :)

Hi all. The other day, I was getting ready to post a new fic I'd written in the Alphas fandom to Archive of Our Own when I realized that there wasn't a "Canon Autistic Character" tag there yet. Not even on my previous fics about Gary.

I've since fixed this, and one other person has tagged a fic of hers with the tag (technically she was first, because I bemoaned the lack of the tag in #yuletide before posting), but according to the Rule of Three, the tag can't be made canonical until a third person tags a fic with it.

Canonizing the tag would make it much easier to search for it on AO3, and it would allow "Canon Autistic Character" to show up in the autocomplete dropdown when people tag their fics.

So what I'm asking is: if any of you have previously posted fics about canon autistic characters on AO3, or if you're transferring old fics to it, or if you're planning on posting something new that could be given the tag: could you please tag it? I will love you forever and maybe give you kudos or a cookie or something.

Thank you!

Do any of you feel like you need to include All The Reactions like I do? Do you think this is related to internalized ableism?

Hello!

So, a couple of months ago my old thesis advisor suggested I submit something to this Call For Papers: “Fantastic! Heroic! Disabled?”, as I'd written a couple of things at the end of college about disability studies and superheroes/sci-fi/fandom. I’m building a proposal around Clint Barton/Hawkeye—his canonical deafness in the comics in the 1980s, the restoration of his hearing in the comics after a few years, and some fans’ re-insertion of Hawkeye’s deafness in fanfictions following the release of The Avengers. Basically I’m aiming use Hawkeye as an example to highlight transformative works/fandom as a place where people can create space for disability (while such a space is rarely, if ever, allowed for in popular culture).

I read a fair number of fics over the summer dealing Hawkeye's hearing loss, however, I’m dreadful at bookmarking/keeping track of fics I read. Thus, most of the deaf-Barton fic that I read over the summer has long since slipped through my virtual fingers. I know there's both a bunch of really great Barton fic and a bunch of really dreadful/problematic Barton fic—and I need both! If you have recs/links, or know someone who has recs/links, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send them my way! Thanks so much!

I'm working on something-- in fact, I'm almost done with it-- that partly intersects with my own experience, and partly doesn't. The problem is that I can't just ask someone with the condition I'm writing about for help, because it's partly made up. There are case studies of people who seem to display the same symptoms (two of them), but I'm not about to ask them even if I did know how to track down anonymous people.

However, even though the disability is made up, it rings true because it's very similar to multiple real conditions. (It really seems like it should be real, too. It's so plausible.) Additionally, it's central to this fic, so I can't just gloss over it.

Wall of Text about the fictional disability and my fic )

I would like to ask people with personal experience to give opinions about this. I do need a beta for characterization, but I'll ask for that on a fandom-specific community; what I'm asking for here, now, is just to talk it over with people. Is anyone open to that?

Thank you. :)

I'm writing a fic for Yuletide with a character with a below the knee amputation who uses a prosthetic. I'm looking for a beta with experience with amputations and prosthesis, particularly legs. Mostly I just want to make sure I don't include anything stupid, and I'd like someone who can spot inaccuracies or accidental stereotypes.

I've done a bit of research on forums etc, but I would really like someone to just give it a once over. You do not need to be super detailed in your beta-ing, just give it a read through and let me know what I'll need to change.

If you recall, I posted a survey last month about starting a big bang challenge for canonically disabled characters. Having aggregated the data, crunched the numbers, and [insert other official statistics sounding thing here], I've started a big bang comm that hopefully meets the needs and preferences of those who took the survey.

Without further ado, I present [community profile] cripbigbang, the first big bang challenge dedicated to characters with disabilities. Yay! Sign-ups are open now and will remain open until fic rough drafts are due on May 1st. You can sign up as a fic author, committing yourself to writing a story of at least 10,000 words. Or, you can sign up as an artist, and create some meta (either written or in video form), or a fanvid, or a fanmix, or some visual art. Check out our FAQ for the schedule and more information.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment.

Recently, I wrote a fic for an old movie called The Goonies. It deals with things I don't have personal experience with and I was wondering whether anyone here could help or knew where to find help making sure that the story is accurate and respectful.

In the coming months, I'm planning on hosting a big bang challenge dedicated to characters with disabilities. That is, characters with canonical (or arguably canonical) disabilities. No disability AUs here. Rather than give able-bodied characters disabilities and imagine "what if?" this challenge would put the focus on actually disabled characters and what it's like for them to do various plotty (or porny) things while disabled. This challenge is about giving disabled characters the attention they didn't get in canon. For participants working on original fic, this challenge is about making room for disabled characters in their canon.

Before this gets started, I'd like to gauge interest, and, more importantly, see how I can make this big bang more successful, accessible, and engaging than big bangs of the past. And for that I need folks to please answer this short survey.

If you have any questions/thoughts/ideas, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Since I've often thought to myself "I wish I could read another disabled person's take on this character" I made up a list of fanworks I've created involving (canonically) disabled characters. I haven't always had disability at the front of my mind when creating, but it affects my point of view regardless. Of course that doesn't guarantee that other disabled people will agree with me!

Also, here's some recs to fanworks by other people about disabled characters.
