I do rely on this fact because I essentially just try to somehow get through the opening sentence and then hope for them to take over. However, my other issues make this difficult; it's often hard for me to understand conversation over the phone (I remember one of the most recent conversations I had, where the person had background noise on their side and I wound up going "okay, they just asked... something. What are the possible questions they could ask in this situation? Which one did this most sound like? Okay, let's just answer that one and hope that's right") And, you know, when I need more time to process-slash-guess the auditory information and decide how to respond I have less time to actually formulate my response without leaving a very noticeable pause in the conversation, so I often wind up essentially tossing the idea of what I want to say at my vocal cords without being able to put it into words beforehand - what then comes out is usually not quite what I actually mean, and I have to correct myself, and if I don't have the time to plan what I want to say it often gets very incoherent because I start adding in irrelevant details and can't get things into a logical order and it is a huge mess of augh.
It does help a bit to remind myself that they get paid to put up with people like me, but the combination of often not knowing what they are saying and often not knowing what *I* am saying still makes it very unpleasant.
