Title: Awakenings
Fandom: Transformers
Rating: PG for some mild violence/fighting
Warnings: Not too much, really. Maybe a bit of violence, since there's fighting, but it's not very dark. And a few bits that I suppose could be suggestive.
Summary: This is not a prompt fill, but rather something I wrote recently and am really excited to be posting here. I'm tired of seeing disability presented in some really stereotypical ways in stories, and of it being fetishized and little else. (I don't mind people having kinks, but I wish I could find more than kinkfic looking for it.)
This is basically my retelling of "Enter the Nightbird." Her character is rather fascinating to me, and I've seen a lot made of her lack of speech. I've seen some people take that as sexist, as "oh, the female character has nothing to say." I always thought she seemed pretty cool, and although I'm the first to agree that canon genderfails all over the place, I also found myself a little uneasy about the idea that characters who can't speak... have nothing to say.
So I decided to explore the implications of a character who has to find alternate means to communicate. As a person with a disability myself, I find the idea of what disability would be for giant robots, and how they'd deal with it, an interesting question. Disability isn't the central issue in this fic, but it does matter to how the others think of and react to her. I think that's also something I'd like to see more of -- stories where disability is present and perhaps matters, but where the stories aren't "...and this is the Disability Episode."

I hope you all enjoy!
