I don't think that trope crosses the character's mind, honestly. (I'm fairly certain it never occurred to the author.) (skip) The premise of this story is, Sam and Dean fucked up stopping the apocalypse, Dean's dead and Sam's dying, Sam insists the friendly local angel take advantage of angelic time-travel powers so Sam can fix this. Friendly local angel says, you do know humans weren't designed for nonlinear time and you probably won't survive the experience, right? Sam says, Dean'll be fine, so bring it on. The seizures and not being able to keep straight the difference between the present and the future-that-wasn't are among the effects of humans not being designed for nonlinear time. Sam didn't know that going in, but he did know going in that he was probably going to die no matter what he did, so while this fic certainly fits the 'I couldn't live like this' pattern from a reader's PoV and from the points of view of characters not Sam, from Sam's PoV (and I think he might be the only one whose PoV matters here), his disability is (almost) entirely irrelevant to his decision to die.
