Let's make a recs post for awesome Yuletide stories about characters with disabilities.

How about link to the story with story name, fandom name, whether the disability plays a major role, and any other information you think we need to know (including warnings you think might be relevant to people in this community). I'll compile all the comments in the body of the post.

♥ Yuletide!

Disability plays a major role

Dia Reeves -- Bleeding Violet:

How to Train Your Dragon:

Megan Whalen Turner -- The Queen's Thief:

Main character has disability; disability doesn't play a major role

Boardwalk Empire:

Mary Renault -- The Charioteer

We absolutely can! If you feel up to it, go ahead and edit this post to start us off and people can add in the comments. Or if you'd rather not have to keep an eye on it/edit to add links to the post, one of us mods can do it.

Yep! I'm going to be afk for much of the weekend, unfortunately, and I believe [personal profile] sasha_feather is also without internet, though, so I can't promise quick updates if we do a mod post. But I would love to see one, and would be happy to contribute as much as I can (for someone who won't have time to read much yuletide until Monday...).

All four of the fics for Mary Renault's The Charioteer feature a canonically disabled protagonist and his canonically disabled love interest. (Both wartime injuries sustained during the evacuation from Dunkirk.)

I particularly recommend To reconcile all things unto himself. It's not disability-focused but it's a great fic.

Two Boardwalk Empire fics

What an awesome idea!

Here are two Boardwalk Empire fics that feature canonically disabled characters. Disability is a small part of both, but they are lovely.

Out Where the West Begins, by Anonymous

Characters: Jimmy Darmody, Al Capone
Warnings: None

Sometimes they say things without thinking. Takes place between "Nights in Ballygran" and "Family Limitation."

Space for Innocence, by Anonymous

Characters: Margaret Schroeder, Richard Harrow, Nucky Thompson
Relationship: Margaret/Nucky
Warnings: Domestic and sexual violence.

"Margaret Schroeder was not a stranger to the world and the rules of men."

Would anyone else like to have an anti-rec/warning thread (or separate post) for fics that approach disability really badly?

Good question. The ability to avoid drama in fandom is the holy grail which tends to elude even the most reasonable issues, so maybe we should skip it and only discuss those things under lock and key in our own spaces.

My suggestion would be that we mods can bat some ideas back and forth and maybe try something like a community locked post for substantive discussion of problematic stories. In several weeks, perhaps, when the Yuletide rush is over. Would that be useful?

That would be a rather different thing, I think. My consideration was geared more toward providing a heads-up, so to speak, while recs are flying fast and deep.

I return to the position of keeping it in locked personal posts.

As expected, the whole How to Train Your Dragon section is made of win and awesome.

I'm a particularly big fan of A Better Leg, which is a fairly lighthearted take on the aftermath of the movie's ending.

Another disability inclusive Yuletide story

This rec post was a great idea!

I'd like to suggest this Yuletide story based on "V for Vendetta" (2005):

Title: UNMASKED (written for Flyakate)
Url: http://archiveofourown.org/works/140756

It deals with V's disability (in terms of him being burned all over), which according to the ableist logic of the film prevented him from developing a romantic relationship with Evey.

Well, in this story it doesn't:)
