Recently, I wrote a fic for an old movie called The Goonies. It deals with things I don't have personal experience with and I was wondering whether anyone here could help or knew where to find help making sure that the story is accurate and respectful.
I was writing about a character who is probably intellectually disabled, who has been kept chained up and hidden by his family (who happen to be the mafia) until the events of the movie, in which he helps to save the day and then goes to live with one of the main characters. The fic is set after the movie and features the character, Sloth, visiting his abusive mother in prison (she's in prison for forgery and probably attempted murder, not for her abusive behavior toward her sons). It's largely about Sloth's thoughts and feelings toward her and how he comes to decide that he not only would like to avoid living with her again but actually deserves to avoid being in an abusive situation like that ever again. He also sort of begins to realize that contact with her can be on his terms and begins to repair some psychological damage done by verbal abuse.
I have a beta, but my beta has a normal IQ and no one ever chained xem up from embarrassment or ableism. (I think.) I like getting the CND perspective on my disability fic, but I'd also like someone who can spot inaccuracies or stereotypes about intellectual disability, the Center for Independent Living and the Special Olympics. I don't need help with grammar, line editing, canon-compliance or plotholes. The fic is not very long at all, though there is a minuscule chance that I could end up expanding it into a longer story.
Is anyone here interested?
