Tor.com is hosting threads on the three episodes comprising Season 3 of the BBC's Sherlock. They're timed to the UK broadcast times, and enthusiasts like me who take advantage of TunnelBear and iPlayer to stream them before their U.S. premiere.
Discussing the middle episode, The Sign of Three, many people said it was "so sad" that Sherlock left the wedding party early. One Tor member, Ursula, demurred. She explained how Sherlock's actions that night could have been planned, and protective, for someone who's an extreme introvert.

I think it's possible for both those things to be true: Sherlock is conserving his interaction-energy and he feels alone and walks away instead of investing more energy in finding a dance partner.
At any rate, I deeply appreciate Ursula's insight: it doesn't pathologize (as so many wish to do with Sherlock, include himself) while it does recognize that all humans need to take care of our particular human brains & bodies.
