Upcoming Event: P.I.E. Poetry Session

Based on an audience poll, there will be a bonus fishbowl session in my series P.I.E. on Tuesday, September 16. 

This series is urban fantasy about a wheelchair-riding private detective who handles the really weird cases, and her able-bodied but kind of accident-prone policeman boyfriend.  When the fishbowl theme is something that doesn't get much attention, I try to spread the word to relevant audiences.  So please tell any of your friends who are mobility-impaired or otherwise interested in this topic that it will be featured in a prompt call where they can come suggest things to be written.  If you're new to P.I.E. then you can find links to all its published poems via the series page; several these were prompted by folks with limited mobility.

I had a quick skim through the PIE stories and the one thing that jarred were a couple of mentions of handicap/ped - they wouldn't have jarred from other characters, but from Brenda they did. We're slightly getting into national differences here, 'handicap' is thoroughly deprecated here in the UK, with pretty much universal use of disability/disabled, while in the States usage is much more mixed, but Brenda doesn't strike me as the kind of disabled person who would use 'handicap', she's so assertive/aware in her disabled identity she's going to call herself disabled whether people like it or not.

I appreciate the feedback. I'll raise this question with my mobility-impaired friends here in the U.S.

For me, I use the terms almost interchangeably; in writing, they're synonyms so I can repeat a concept without repeating the exact word so often. If I'm ranking them, I think of disabled as less favorable than handicapped -- that disability means not being able to do something, whereas handicapped makes it harder to do something.
