Welcome to the Festibility prompts post!

Festibility is a fandom festival accepting all kinds of fanworks (fic, meta, art, icons, podfic, vids, recs, picspams, drabble sets etc) about disabled characters. Works can focus on canonically disabled characters or canonically able-bodied characters that you reimagine as disabled. Pieces can be as long or short as you like. You can find out more at the Festibility announcement post on access_fandom!

Here’s how the prompts will work:

Prompts can be general or fandom- or character-specific. You can also choose to specify a type of disability. Be creative and have fun. Post prompts now through September 15th!

Fills can be posted starting Thursday, July 15th and the posting period goes until September 15th. We encourage you to post disability-centric fanworks to access_fandom after the close of the fest. After September 15th, please post to the community instead of commenting here, and link back to the prompt (if any) that inspired you.

Nest Your Responses. Respond directly to a prompt with the text of your story in the comment or a link to the story if it is posted elsewhere.

Anonymous commenting is allowed. To post anonymously when logged in, click on 'More Options' and pick 'Anonymous'. Do not ask anyone to reveal themselves if they choose to post anonymously.

We want warnings to be a community standard for this festival. If you need help putting warnings on your fan work, please ask your beta or contact a moderator. We accept “Choose Not To Warn” as a warning, but in the interest of making this fest as accessible as possible we prefer to have works be labeled with specific trigger warnings.

Warn for common triggers even if the prompt implies some. You must warn for common violent or sexual triggers. Unwarned stories/art are subject to immediate screening at the mods' discretion.

Language reminder: Please say “has diabetes”, don’t say “suffers from diabetes” or “suffers hearing loss” when describing someone’s disability. Please say “uses a wheelchair” or similarly neutral language, do not say “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”. Please do not use ableist or other oppressive pejoratives such as “lame”. Also, please do not include disabilities in your content warnings--It is disrespectful to cast a piece of someone's identity as a warning.

ETA: There have been some concerns raised about this language policy. For clarification, this language reminder is meant more for prompt suggestion than for actual fic. I'd like to see the issue addressed - how does Ivan cope? How debilitating is the phobia? How does he cope with his cousin's apparent complete disregard for the phobia?

Young Avengers: Kate attains a high-level spinal cord injury in a fight. When she returns home after rehab, her teammates are all too willing to jump in and help her whenever they see her struggling with something. After getting annoyed with this, she makes it clear that she needs to practice doing as many things independently as possible, and she'll let them know if she needs help.

(Bonus if Kate is in a canon or non-canon relationship at the time of the injury, and they figure out the sexytimes part together.)

Avatar: The Last Airbender (spoilers for the series finale) (skip) I'd really love an Azula story that takes place after the finale and takes mental illness seriously. I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm thinking about this story in contrast to the two common types of stories that I've seen, where she's often in the background and is either instantly perfectly better (to be a threat) or is permanently institutionalized because she will never be able to do anything again (to make other people sad).

Is it a bit too "Sneakers" to want Hardison the Blind Hacker? I hope not, because that confrontation seen between Hardison and Xaos could be pretty awesome, and I do wonder how it would change some of his cons.

Prompt: Jhamel (Star Trek: Enterprise), she's not disabled by Aenar standards, so how does she react to spending time in cultures where the majority of people are photon-dependent?

Doctor Who, Amy Pond, something where the Doctor's presence in Amy's life doesn't totally undermine the validity of modern mental health diagnosis'. Amy has a mood disorder, and everyone's lack of belief in her story about the Doctor only exacerbated her symptoms at certain vulnerable points in her illness. (Your choice what to focus on, but perhaps look at how Amy deals with her family being embarrassed if she's being 'odd' in public, like when she starts shouting at her wedding.)

Prompt: Any futuristic or magical-healing fandom: Just because the medical/healing establishment cannot find a diagnosis does not mean that there is no diagnosis.

Two prompts, any fandom:

1) A character acquires a traumatic brain injury over the course of an adventure. NOT played for laughs, not making the character completely incompetent, but causes realistic problems with day-to-day life and a notable change in the character's personality. Bonus points if character is female.

2) Any fandom: realistic portrayal of a character with an invisible disability who provides regular care for a character with a more obviously recognized disability. (Bonus points if the invisible disability is ADD/ADHD and the character being cared for is a parental figure who is easily annoyed by the main character being a flake. Even more bonus points if the person providing the care is not female.)

Because if so, for prompt one, Nihil Inherit by ratherastory, Supernatural AU, major character death (skip) and possibly suicide—don't look at me, I honestly don't know whether Dean going through with Sam's "Dean, please kill me" counts as Sam suiciding.

Firefly: Mal's fight with the Operative in the Big Damn Movie leaves him with nerve damage in one or both legs. He adjusts his life on the ship (maybe less than gracefully), and in jobs, despite Zoe taking the lead in all off-ship work.

2.) Firefly: River (post-Serenity) - Even though the voices are (mostly) gone, River discovers that she still have some voices, coming from inside her.
