Festibility Index Post
Sun, Jul. 18th, 2010 09:05 pmI'll be editing this to add new fanworks as they're linked in the comm or added in the prompts post. Please let me know if there's anything I've missed or got wrong.
There's also a Festibility collection at AO3.
Note on warnings: the prompt post says that authors need to either warn for common triggers, put "No warnings apply" (if that's the case), or put "Author does not warn" in the subject line.
Right now, we have:
sick and tired of being sick and tired by anonymous, Glee, Rachel, G, "no warnings apply"
The Uncertain Trumpet by
bliumchik, X-Men, Scott Summers, "no warnings I can think of"
Learning to Fly by
sqbr A: TLA fanart, Teo, Toph, "No Archive Warnings Apply"
Nobody Bleeds for the Dancer by
alexseanchai, Supernatural, Dean, "self-injury & reference to torture & suicide"
After the War by

A Matter of Secrets by
jalendavi_lady, A:TLA, Zuko, Toph, PG, "Advisory: Includes discussion of disabilities by people who grew up in a heavily ableist culture and by teenagers tripping over the English language. "
Toph Fanart Linkspam by
laceblade
The Better Part of Valor story by Teresa C. , podfic by
juniperphoenix, Highlander, "Content warnings: none"
The Booth in the Back by
gorgeousnerd, Supernatural, Dean, PG-13, gen, "PG-13 for creature-related violence and strong (but non-ableist) language"; "Author Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings" on AO3.
What He Means When He Talks About Running by anonymous, DCU, Wally West, gen, "No warnings apply"
More Barnabas Collins than Nick Knight by
jadelennox, Community, Abed + ensemble, gen, G, "No warnings apply"
Heart of Steel by
milleniumrex, DC Comics, Kara Zor-El/Cassie Sandsmark, PG-13, "Contains some ableist language from a character dealing with a new disability, as well as from a villain. This fic is aiming for a realistic look at dealing with quadriplegia, so there will be some dark parts in the early going, including brief discussion of suicidal urges. Contains discussion of underage sexuality, but no sex scenes."
Sister by
terajk, Halloween, R for graphic violence and language, Warnings: "Character death (murder), psych system abuse, ableist language."
The Case of the Maiden Tribute by
katta, Sherlock Holmes (2009), R, Warnings: "Graphic depiction of violence, nongraphic depiction of sexual child abuse" -- author would like to note that it's not primarily focused on the disability element
Awakenings by
stainless, Transformers, PG, "Warnings: Not too much, really. Maybe a bit of violence, since there's fighting, but it's not very dark. And a few bits that I suppose could be suggestive."
Ship Duty by anonymous, Vorkosigan series, Ivan, gen, "Warnings: None apply so far, but unfinished. I'll note if it changes. Um, this is the first fanfic I’ve ever posted, so that’s the warning; Part 3: "Warning: I'm referencing (non-graphic) abuse in the past by Serg Vorbarr and Ges Vorrutyer, and some really horrible (but typically Barrayaran) treatment of the victims afterward. So par for the universe, but still warning-worthy." ETA: Now complete and posted in full on AO3: Ship Duty by miss_lanyon.
Forward Momentum by
azurelunatic, Vorkosigan series, Miles, gen, warnings: "references to past surgery."
to this earth we fall by
gloss, Marvel comics, Bucky Barnes & Nick Fury, PG. "Note: Both characters were born well before WWII and their worldviews are...not quite in synch with modern attitudes; readers should be warned for ableist language and convictions."
This Time is Different (And Better) by
katta, Threshold, "no archive warnings apply".
Gaps by
terajk, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko & Azula, PG-13, "Warnings: Language, ableism."
There's also a Festibility collection at AO3.

Date: 2010-07-19 06:50 am (UTC)The story is Zuko-centric, but (skip) it's Toph's assumption that everyone else can see perfectly, along with her way of using earthbending to 'see', which reveals Zuko's keeping a secret. She's also one of the first people he reveals the damage to his eye to, and that scene includes Zuko having to take into account her complete blindness while explaining his own partial vision loss.

Date: 2010-07-20 07:15 am (UTC)The prompt post says that authors need to either warn for triggers or put "Author does not warn" in the subject line; so far, no-one's done the latter.
I'll add a link to the policy in the post, so people know.

Date: 2010-07-20 07:43 am (UTC)If you run into something that doesn't have a warning where it should, you can contact the mods to get it screened pronto.
FWIW, I haven't seen anything so far that jumped out at me as OMG SHOULD HAVE A WARNING AND DOESN'T. But my brain's just in indexing mode right now; I don't feel I can take responsibility for double-checking warnings or adding new ones.
I've linked so people can read whatever warnings the author did or didn't put for themselves; I mentioned the "warning for self-injury" here because it was a very major and obvious trigger and the author had chosen to warn for it.

Date: 2010-07-20 08:13 am (UTC)What I am trying to get at is that there is a huge difference, for a reader, between "No warnings apply" and "Choose not to warn", and if the author doesn't say either, you can't tell which it is without reading the story, and for some people, that's not safe. So you are forced to assume "Choose not to warn".
The mods have said you can contact them if a warning is missing, but haven't said anything about when an author forgot to say whether they meant "No warnings apply" or "Choose not to warn". That was what half the warnings debate was about - if an author forgets to say "None of these warnings apply", you are forced to assume "Choose not to warn", even if that was not the author's intention.

Date: 2010-07-20 02:49 pm (UTC)I have the impression that people in fandom usually don't think of putting a "no warnings apply", whence the problem of readers not being able to tell if a story with no warnings means "no warnings apply" or "author doesn't warn".
